Sister Region Agreement an Australian First
Today’s signing of a Sister Region Agreement between Mayors of Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday Regional Councils and the city of Yantai in China is expected to be the first of its kind in Australia.
Chair of the Mackay, Isaac, Whitsunday Regional Organisation of Councils (MIWROC), Cr Deirdre Comerford, said the innovative agreement had been four years in the making and would form a close bond between the two regions.
Cr Comerford said the partnership would be of mutual benefit to both regions and was aimed at promoting a friendship based on economic and trade interflow between the two countries.
“This partnership is about establishing goodwill and opportunities for both communities well into the future. It’s about capitalising on the economic similarities between our two countries and sharing ideas, cultural exchanges and investment opportunities.
“The idea of a partnership between the two regions was initiated following a trade mission from Mackay to Yantai in 2010. This interaction was followed by Yantai-based business Yanjian purchasing land to develop short-term accommodation and cultural visits by students from the city.
“Soon a strong friendship developed and a range of opportunities were identified between the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday region and the city of Yantai.”
Cr Comerford said a delegation of eight senior officials from Yantai travelled to Mackay for the signing of the Sister Region agreement. They have spent the past day touring the Whitsunday Islands, flying over the Bowen Basin and touring the port of Hay Point and Paget Industrial Estate.
“We sincerely thank the Vice Chairman Yu Xuhua of the Standing Committee of Yantai People’s Congress for his city’s commitment to this partnership and we look forward to a long and successful relationship,” she said.
