AMBER THREAT

QLD Flood Watch: North Tropical Coast and parts of the Central Coast

Source: Bureau of Meteorology

Issued at 1:22 pm EST on Friday 20 December 2024

Flood Watch Number: 3

LOCALISED HEAVY RAINFALL AND MINOR FLOODING LIKELY IN PARTS OF COASTAL CATCHMENTS BETWEEN COOKTOWN AND MACKAY (INCLUDING TOWNSVILLE) FROM FRIDAY AFTERNOON

ISOLATED MODERATE TO MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE IN AREAS OF HEAVIEST RAINFALL FROM FRIDAY AFTERNOON ONWARDS

A trough associated with a developing tropical low over the tropical north is combining with a southeasterly surge to produce persistent showers and rain areas with embedded thunderstorms for parts of the Flood Watch area during Friday and into Saturday.

Catchments across the Flood Watch area are wet from recent rainfall and saturated in parts.

Widespread daily rainfall totals of 35 - 80 mm are likely on Friday. Localised heavier rainfall totals of 160 - 200 mm in a 6 hour period are likely for coastal regions and 100 -150 mm for inland areas during Friday, with isolated heavier falls up to 250 mm possible. Rainfall totals may ease slightly on Saturday, with likely widespread totals of 30 - 60 mm.

There is significant uncertainty in the timing and location of the heaviest rainfall, though small coastal catchments may receive the highest rainfall totals. Localised river level rises and flash flooding are likely within the areas of heaviest rainfall, with minor riverine flooding likely in parts of the Flood Watch area from Friday afternoon. Isolated moderate to major flooding may be possible in the areas of heaviest rainfall from Friday afternoon onwards. Due to the localised nature of the heavier falls, at this stage it is not possible to be more specific about the areas of highest flood risk.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

Daintree River(including Bloomfield River)

Mossman River

Barron River

Mulgrave and Russell Rivers

Johnstone River

Tully River

Murray River

Herbert River

Black River

Ross and Bohle Rivers(moderate flood warning current for Bohle River)
