QLD Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Heavy Rain

For people in parts of Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Coast and Whitsundays, Maranoa and Warrego and Darling Downs and Granite Belt Forecast Districts.

Issued at 7:37 am Saturday, 30 November 2024.

Severe thunderstorms with heavy rainfall continue into the morning over the Townsville coast and inland parts.

Weather Situation: A very moist and unstable airmass supported by an approaching upper trough is producing scattered showers and isolated severe thunderstorms over the Herbert and Lower Burdekin coast and inland parts including the NSW border. Storms are generally slow moving and may continue throughout the morning.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Proserpine, Bowen, Hamilton Island, Ayr, Alva Beach and Mungindi.

Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Central Highlands and Coalfields districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.

204 mm was reported at Haughton Bridge in the 6 hours to 05:40 am.

128 mm was reported at Giru Alert in the 3 hours to 05:15 am.

112 mm was reported at Peter Faust Dam in the 3 hours to 07:30 am.

Emergency services advise people to:
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.
