Mass sackings at Whitsunday Times printers

The Whitsunday Times' printer (and immediate owner), The Mackay Daily Mercury, has announced this after noon that "NEWSPAPER printing facilities in Mackay will close in July as part of a plan to consolidate Queensland operations."

APN News & Media, the owners of the Whitsunday Times, are closing the Mackay (and Bundaberg) priniting facilities, resulting in the loss of 25 jobs.

Our 'tip-off' tweet about the Whitsunday Times 2 days ago

Sign of troubles at the Whitsunday Times and its owners started appearing two days ago with a profit downgrade warning by APN, followed by the sacking of many Sub-Editors at the Whitsunday Times sister papers.

The possibility of rationalization (retrenchments) at the Whitsunday Times must now be on the cards.

There is now speculation that the Whitsunday Times will be reduced to fortnightly or monthly printing, or maybe cease altogether, after the local printing operations close in two months.
