Airlie Beach Schoolies wrap up

Today is the last official day of Schoolies here in Airlie Beach, Whitsunday. Schoolies Week this year ran from 20 - 24 November.

Followers of our Twitter and Facebook News services, plus many Airlie Beach locals may disagree with the mayor. However, local opinion to Schoolies is mixed.


Now, we don't hear every thing that goes on, and, due to the lack of news bureaux and independent media here, very little bad news gets out.

Between Friday afternoon and Monday morning, I had heard of the following incidents (events between 11pm & dawn could not be noted):


Friday  19 November
  • 7.10pm 1 group of Schoolies already causing issues at Kippara down in Jubilee Pocket (opp. old Island Traders) 
  • 10.03pm Reports of a Streaker on Waterson Way

Saturday 20 November
  • 1.27pm Schoolies / Weather push Police resources to capacity - doing a great job considering the workload 
  • 1.41pm 
    * Property & people targeted with a slingshot on Shute Harbour Road, Cannonvale;
    * Car doing burnouts behind Magnums;
    * 5 Moranbah males stopped & questioned about projectiles coming from their car;
    * Gregory Cannon Valley Road is still Closed at Crofton Creek;
    * Truck stuck in driveway & road near Club Croc - tow truck required to pull it out.
  • 2.42pm 1 person busted DUI, Unlicensed, Unregistered on Jubilee Pocket Road, Jubilee Pocket
  • 9.22pm Reports of 2 males selling heroin at $200 near Schoolies Central
  • 9.29pm Sun Princess tied up at W Arm at Abel Point has battery explode and small fire. No injuries.

Sunday 21 November
  • 5.44pm Police called to residence at Eshelby Drive, Cannonvale - front lawn has a new gnome. Owner of premises can't get intoxicated schoolie to move.
  • 6.15pm Sun All available Police requested - main street Airlie Beach - very large crowd getting unruly. Ambulances sent to Main Street, Airlie Beach - people hit by projectiles
  • 6.39pm Schoolies: Police have situation under control in main street Airlie Beach (Nomads). Three in custody. One attended to by Ambos with an injured back.
  • 7.00pm Mellee at Nomads between Mackay & Townsville folk. 3 arrested. 1 also with back injuries.
  • 7.43pm 2nd person in 24 hours busted DUI in Jubilee Pocket Rd, Jubilee Pocket.
  • 7.52pm Very large crowd around McDonalds Airlie Beach.
  • 9.52pm Getting uglier in Airlie Beach . . .
    * Large fight near Beaches, 1 man's head hit ground, Paramedics attending;
    * Male found passed out in lane between Magnums & Beaches;
    * Large fight near the Magnums booking centre.
  • 10.27pm Looks like Police just caught someone DUI on Shute Harbour Road, Cannonvale, right in front of the Cannonvale WebCam & infront of Reece Plumbing.
Congratulations to the Police and Ambulance services for doing an excellent job.
