One person is dead and another airlifted to Mackay Hospital after a horror smash on Shute Harbour Road, Cannonvale, near the Centro Shopping Centre, at around 6.45pm.
Details are sketchy, however it is believed two vehicles were involved, a Hyundai and a X Trail. No further details are known.

At around 7.30pm, Whitsunday Police secured an area of the Centro Car Park, Cannonvale for an emergency landing pad for the RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter. Some small tress and shrubs were sacrificed to ensure the safety of the helicopter and its crew.

Unfortunately, about 20 minutes before the rescue chopper arrived, a 30yo man was declared deceased at the scene. Another person injured in the second car was airlifted by the RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter to Mackay Hospital with spinal injuries.
10.30pm - there was still only one lane of traffic being shuttled around the accident scene. Accident Investigation Police from Mackay are on site.
11.00pm - vehicles were about to be removed from the scene.

Update: serious traffic crash, Cannonvale: A 30-year-old man has died and a 30-year-old woman has been air lifted to the Mackay Hospital with suspected spinal injuries and a lower leg fracture after a two vehicle traffic crash on the Shute Harbour Road (near the Centro Shopping Centre) tonight. The crash occurred around 6.45pm; the road remains closed. Police ask motorists to continue to avoid the area and seek an alternate route. Further information will be provided when it is available.
