No Brian Burke or Graham Richardson here.

Two much publicised campaigns by Tourism Whitsundays have failed this week, highlighting again Tourism Whitsunday's actions and ability to represent and lobby on behalf of the Whitsunday region.

  • Campaign: Lobby the Federal Government for $500,000 in funding for three wrecks to be sunk locally to create a 'Dive Trail'.
  • Leader: Mark Turner - Tourism Whitsunday, Destination Management Officer.
  • Duration: About three years.
  • Result: Federal Government funding will not be made available.
  • Comments: Mark Turner: "With tourism the way it's been travelling in more recent times, I think it wouldn't be too hard to figure out that it would be a big ask for the local community to try and stump that up."

  • Campaign: 'Lobby the airlines to provide more services to the Whitsundays'.
  • Leader: Peter O'Reilly - Tourism Whitsunday, Chief Executive Officer.
  • Duration: Approx. Nine months.
  • Result: Jetstar reducing services to the Whitsundays.
  • Comments: Peter O'Reilly: "Unfortunately we will not escape unscathed as Tuesday and Wednesday services from Melbourne and Brisbane to Hamilton Island will be cut during the months of May and June."
