QLD Severe Weather Warning: Damaging Winds & Heavy Rain

For people in parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays Forecast Districts.
Issued at 4:56 pm Sunday, 1 April 2018.
Weather Situation:
Ex-tropical cyclone Iris was located at 4pm approximately 400km east-northeast of Cairns and moving south-southwest at 5 km/h. It is expected to move southward this evening and track closer to the coast on Monday and Tuesday. There remains some level of uncertainty regarding its movement and development over the coming days. There is a moderate chance that the system will develop into a tropical cyclone on Tuesday or Wednesday and Tropical Cyclone Advices will be issued if threat increases.
Damaging winds, with peak gusts of around 90km/h, may develop about the coast, islands and higher terrain within the warning area during Monday evening or Tuesday morning.
Heavy rain, which may lead to flash flooding, is also expected to develop from Monday evening. Six hour totals of 150 to 200m are likely with local falls up to 300mm possible. 24 hour totals of 200 to 300mm are expected.
A Flood Watch for coastal catchments between Cairns and Rockhampton are current.

Locations which may be affected include Proserpine, Bowen, Townsville, Palm Island, Hamilton Island, Ingham, Innisfail, Ayr and Cardwell.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
