Source: Bureau of Meteorology INITIAL FLOOD WATCH FOR PARTS OF THE WIDE BAY & BURNETT, CENTRAL HIGHLANDS & COALFIELDS, CAPRICORNIA, AND CENTRAL COAST TO WHITSUNDAYS FORECAST DISTRICTS Issued at 3:12 pm EST on Wednesday 3 February 2016 Issue Number: 1 A coastal trough is forecast to develop in the Fraser Coast area on Thursday and move slowly north to the Central Coast by Friday. The system is expected to become slow-moving near the Central Coast over the weekend. Widespread showers, storms and rain areas are expected to develop near the trough. Widespread 24 hour rainfall totals of 50-100 mm are forecast, with locally heavy falls up to 300 mm likely, mainly about the coast and ranges. Rainfall will persist over some areas for more than 24 hours. River level rises above the minor flood level are likely, particularly in areas that have received significant rainfall recently. Heavy rainfall may also lead to localised flash flooding. Catchments at risk within the Flood Watch area include the Cherwell-Burrum, Burnett, Kolan, Baffle, Boyne, Calliope, Fitzroy, Pioneer, Proserpine and Don, and southern parts of the Burdekin catchment. See www.bom.gov.au/qld/warnings to view the current flood warnings for Queensland. This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and creeks should monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop.
